There is a favorite parable that is about the difference between heaven and hell. A man goes into a place where there is beautiful food all around. The aromas of delicious soup fills the air. There are people trying to eat, but there is something different about these people. Their arms are very long, so long that they cannot feed themselves. The soup that smells so delicious goes to waste. They are starving with food at their fingertips. This place that seems like heaven is really hell.
The man leaves and goes into the other room. It was a similar room with beautiful food all around. He thought he had returned to the first room of hell. But, as he looks at the people to see if they are starving, he notices they are partnered up to feed each other. Their arms are incapable of feeding themselves but perfectly adequate to feed one another. Everyone ate. Nothing is wasted. The place is heaven.
Super Bowl Sunday is upon us and there are many excited people, anxious to cheer for their favorite team. It is a time of great fellowship, food and fun. At our church, and many others Christian churches, we celebrate Souper Bowl of Caring. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the game but also remember those who need a little extra help. We bring cans of soup and “vote” for our favorite team, by placing the soup cans in the bucket, designated “49ers” or “Chiefs”. Our church takes the soup from the Souper Bowl to donate to a local charity, in our case, VacaFish.
I wonder if you might consider partnering with the many churches in this endeavor? If you are having a Super Bowl party, why not ask people to bring cans of soup to donate? You can drop them at our church, Covenant Community Church in Vacaville, or take them to any ministry that helps with food. If you want to donate directly, you can donate on souperbowl.org.
Life is much more like heaven when we live in it together. If you want to live life intentionally in Christian community, I invite you to our church. My door is always open. May God bless you richly.
In His Grip,
Covenant Community Church
