The Greatest Christmas Story Ever Told: Joy
How the Grinch Stole Christmas plays on TBS tonight at 7:30 and on YouTube, to name a few options. As you watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original 1966 cartoon), please consider a couple of things:
- The Grinch lives a very isolated life and doesn’t participate in the community down the hill. He thinks that Christmas is just about presents under the tree but learns that it is really about presence together. Who are the people in your family that might need community? Who are the people in your neighborhood who might be really lonely? Who needs your presence? Take a moment to pray for them and do one hospitable thing for them this week (invite them for a meal, invite them to Christmas Eve service, bake cookies, rake leaves, etc.).
- The story tells us, “The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now please do not ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right. It could be perhaps that his shoes were too tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all may have been that “heart was two sizes too small”. After he started to change his mind about Christmas, the Grinch’s small heart “grew three sizes that day”. When he builds relationships with the community, things start to change, including the size of his heart. He starts to understand that when love is being poured into him and he is pouring out love to others, his heart starts to grow. How might God grow your heart and the heart of someone who could be blessed. Take a moment to make Christmas cards for someone in a convalescent center or a hospital. Come sing Christmas carols with our church family from 5:00-5:45 on Christmas Eve. Think of some other ways you can exercise your heart muscle this season!
